FajrUp Privacy Policy

FajrUp is developed and published by H.elm B.V., trading as MESSOUD, registered in the Netherlands. H.elm B.V. is the controller for the personal data described below. You can reach us at fajr@messoud.com.

This policy explains what FajrUp does with your data. The short version: almost everything stays on your device, we do not use advertising or tracking, and we do not sell data to anyone.

What we process, and why

Your location or city. To calculate the prayer times and the Qibla direction for your position, the app needs to know roughly where you are. You choose how: automatic through your device location, or by entering a city and country yourself. When the app requests prayer times from the AlAdhan calculation service, your coordinates or city are sent to that service. The app can also calculate prayer times entirely on your device, without any network connection. We do not store your location on our own servers.

Your alarm settings and results. Your wake time, chosen calculation method, missions, and the record of which mornings you completed are stored on your device. They are not sent anywhere unless you choose to join a group.

Group data, only if you use groups. Groups are optional. If you create or join one, the following is stored in our database: the name you enter yourself, your current streak, your best streak, your total number of completed mornings, and the date of your last completed morning. Other members of that group can see this. You do not need an account, an email address, or a phone number. The app signs in anonymously and receives a random identifier so your own entry can be recognised.

Because a record of completed Fajr mornings can say something about your religious practice, we treat this as a special category of personal data under Article 9 of the GDPR. We process it only on the basis of your explicit consent, which you give by choosing to join a group. If you do not use groups, this data never leaves your device.

Camera and microphone. Some wake-up missions use the camera to count push-ups or squats, to recognise an object you photograph, or the microphone to check a recitation. This processing happens entirely on your device, using models that are included in the app. No video, audio, or image is sent to us or to any third party. If you photograph an object as proof, that photo is stored on your device only, and older proofs are removed automatically. You can avoid camera and microphone entirely by enabling the accessibility mode for missions in Settings, or by choosing other missions.

Notifications. With your permission the app schedules alarms and reminders on your device. This happens locally. We do not operate a push server and cannot send you messages.

Feature requests. If you use the option to request a feature, your email program opens with a message addressed to us. Nothing is sent until you send it yourself. We use what you write only to improve the app.

Legal grounds

For the core functionality of the app, including prayer time calculation and setting your alarm, we rely on the performance of our agreement with you and on our legitimate interest in providing a working product. For device location, camera, microphone, and notifications we rely on the permission you grant in iOS, which you can withdraw at any time in your device settings. For group data, including the streak information described above, we rely on your explicit consent.

Who else is involved

Google Firebase hosts the database and the anonymous sign-in used for groups. Google acts as our processor. Data may be processed outside the European Economic Area, in which case the transfer is covered by the European Commission's standard contractual clauses and the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.

AlAdhan provides prayer time calculations. Your coordinates or city are sent to this service when the app requests times online. The app works without it, using on-device calculation.

Apple provides the App Store and TestFlight. If you install a test version, Apple processes installation and crash information under its own privacy policy. We receive only aggregated reports.

We do not use advertising networks, analytics tools, or tracking of any kind, and we do not sell or share your data for marketing purposes.

How long we keep it

Data on your device stays until you delete it or remove the app. Group data stays until you leave the group, until the group is deleted, or until you ask us to remove it. Write to fajr@messoud.com and we will delete your entry.

Your rights

You have the right to access your data, to correct it, to have it deleted, to restrict or object to its processing, and to receive a copy in a portable form. Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time, including by leaving a group or by turning off a permission in iOS. To exercise a right, write to fajr@messoud.com. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.

Children

FajrUp is not directed at young children. The App Store rating for the app is 9+. We do not knowingly collect data from children in a way that requires parental consent.

Security

Access to the group database is restricted by security rules: each member can write only their own entry, and group records cannot be altered by others. Communication with our services uses encrypted connections.

Changes

If we change how the app handles data, we will update this page and the date at the top. Significant changes will also be mentioned in the app.
